The Kindle Fire packs a lot of value, but it doesn’t come with the App Store … or even Google Play. It’s getting better every day, but Amazon has a way to go.

If You Own an Android or Windows Phone: Either will suit you just fine. But by using either of these devices, you’re asserting that you’ve broken free of the iOS atmosphere and want something a little more customizable, and a little more tech-y. The Kindle Fire is probably the better choice for you. Plus, you’ll save money!

Like all of Amazon’s tablets, the experience revolves around Amazon’s media. If you’re an Amazon Prime customer, or just a fanatic for Kindle books, Amazon Instant Video and Amazon mp3, the whole ecosystem will be a multimedia wonderland for you. Amazon has also expanded features tested in earlier products, like X-Ray, which lets you dive deeper into movies you watch by showing you information such as actor bios and trivia. The feature now works for music too, and you can use it to follow along to the lyrics (or sing along) as a song plays.

The app also includes shortcuts for sharing and locating related boards. Users can simply tap and hold down on a pin they like, and a small menu will pop up that enables users to share that pin, or search for other related content.

If You Plan to Use it Primarily for Games: No question: go with the iPad mini. The best mobile games are always on iOS and maybe… possibly… eventually make their way to other platforms. Not even Android can compare in this field, let alone Fire OS.

The Paperwhite has awesome features built in that make reading a great experience. Kindle Page Flip lets you skim through your books by page, chapter or all the way to the end, without losing where you’re at. It features Smart Lookup, which integrates a full dictionary with X-Ray and Wikipedia. It also has a built in vocabulary builder, so any time you look up what a word means on your Kindle, that word is added to an easy-to-access list, where you can quiz yourself with flashcards. And, like the Kindle Fire, it has Kindle FreeTime, which is aimed at young readers and tracks their progress and awards achievements as they reach their goals. Awesome.

In
terms of total downloads in October 2013, however, Google actually dominates the iOS platform, with YouTube leading the way with the most popular download on the platform. But Google also has Google
Maps (#3), Google Search (#4), Gmail (#8) and Chrome (#9) among the top ten. Apple only has three app titles in the top ten on its own platform: Find My Phone (#5), GarageBand (#7) and iBooks (#10).
Facebook is the second most popular download in iOS in October. Still, on a revenue basis, Apple’s suite of apps — including Pages, iMovie, Keynote, Numbers, GarageBand and iPhoto — occupy the
top six spots among the highest revenue generators in the Apple App Store.

Not surprisingly, given its Android-based models, Samsung is a dominant force in
Google Play (259 apps), with Sony (216), Google itself (81), Panasonic (77) and Disney (54) rounding out the top 5.

Better and better Samsung phones could, in theory, lead some Apple customers to make the switch. More likely, however, is that Samsung continues to consolidate its control of the Android ecosystem, pushing out Google’s other hardware partners in the process. With Samsung pushing alternatives to Google’s services, Samsung’s total dominance could put Google in an unfortunate position.

The critics might not like them, but buyers sure doIn general, Samsung phones are not well-liked by the tech media — most reviewers seem to prefer other Android handsets instead. Computerworld, for example, believes the top Android phone is Motorola’s Moto X, while PCWorld thinks Google’s own Nexus 5 is the best Android phone on the market. Techradar loves Sony’s Xperia Z, and Business Insider thinks buyers should go with HTC’s One, as long as they get the unlocked version from Google Play.

Now Samsung users can get bunch of titles for only a dollar a piece if they go through the Samsung App Store! Sega Announced the discounts today on its blog. From November 26th to December 2nd, Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Ep. I, and Sonic The Hedgehog Ep. II are only $1 USD through the Samsung Apps store. Just direct your Samsung device to the company’s app store.

In Amazon’s Appstore, Amazon itself (109) is by far the leading
developer using the platform. But in this environment which serves both Kindle and Android devices, Disney (23) and Sony (21) are making some effort, followed by Adobe (11) and IBM (5).

My biggest complaint with the original iPad Mini was its weak display. Go ahead. Call me a snoot. But after years of living in a pixel-free world, the old iPad Mini’s screen looked too grainy for me to properly enjoy it. It’s the primary reason why I thought Google’s new Nexus 7 was better than the iPad Mini this summer.

The iPad’s biggest advantage over the competition is its app selection. As good as its two biggest rivals, the Kindle Fire HDX and Nexus 7, may be, those devices simply don’t have as many good tablet-optimized apps as the iPad does. The Google Play Store for Android apps is full of great software, but most of it is designed for smaller screen smartphones. Developers are much more active on the iPad, which means you can get versions of your favorite apps that take full advantage of 8-inch+ screens.

Hark, Leonard Read fans! Take heart, disillusioned entrepreneurs! The iPad is a wonder of capitalism just like the pencil. And contrasting a pencil – seemingly simple, but used far less in our digital age – with an iPad reminds us that the collaboration that made possible the manufacture of old tools still works the same way today.

Watching video on the iPad Air is also a noticeable improvement from doing so on smaller displays. The screen size isn’t much bigger, but as it is with reading ebooks, it’s big enough to make a world of difference.

This past week I’ve been using the iPad Air with the ZAGGkeys Folio keyboard almost exclusively for my work, and it’s been great. The combo is as thin as can be, and the combined weight is very light. I can slip it into a pocket on almost any bag without noticing it when I carry it around.

An iPad and a pencil aren’t that different, after all. As the ad notes, both can “start a poem or finish a symphony;” both are “extremely simple and yet extremely powerful.” And just as importantly, the process of making each of these items hinges on the expertise of many parties, working independently of one another to advance their own interests.

Modiface Virtual Makeover is an excellent app for those are serious about looking good. The rest of us will enjoy its many features as well. It’s free (amazingly) so there’s no excuse not to get this app.

Looking at the proportion of vulnerable apps, they found HTC’s Wildfire S to be the worst performer of pre-2012 devices, and LG’s Optimus P8880 the worst among post-2012 devices. Sony’s Experia Arc S and the HTC One X had the least, while Google’s Nexus 4 in particular performed well here.

Being able to transform into a creature, either real or imagined, has long be a stable of folklore for many cultures around the world. Heck, I wanted to grow wings and take off. Just thought it’d be cool to do. In my heart of hearts I still do.

While you can play with it, this app isn’t a toy. For those who are serious about their looks and want to see how much difference subtle changes in color, application, and contrasts can make, this app can be a serious money saving tool.

Once selected you can size and rotate the tat and position it where ever you want. You can also flip, reverse, and change the tat’s color. Grab and paste as many tats as you need, they are applied as layers so one won’t affect the other. Unfortunately you can’t distort the tat to make fit a body contour, but the results are good enough for you to see how it’ll look before you go under the needle.

I’ve always wanted a tattoo, but could never decide what to get. For me, a tattoo should make a personal statement about you, so the design you select has to really say something. Remember, it’s permanent. Which is why I still don’t have a tattoo.

When Silvio Rizzi pulled down the Reeder app for iPad after Google Reader’s death, he swore to develop and eventually release a new version. Now, Rizzi has made good on that promise by launching Reeder 2 — a reworking of the older RSS reader that’s compatible with both iPhones and iPads. The app sports a brand-spankin’ new interface that replaces the old browns and sepias with gray, pulls feeds from several sources — including Feedly and Feedbin — and it can now also open links on Google Chrome. Reeder 2’s now available on the App Store, but if you feel iffy shelling out $4.99 for it, you can give the RSS client a whirl by getting the older iPhone version for the low, low price of free.
