New APIs in Android Lollipop bring capabilities similar to iOS 7’s iBeacons, allowing your device to interact with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices. Apple’s iBeacons are used for location-aware apps. But In Google’s version, the APIs are aimed mainly at advertising-oriented beacons, such as to accept messages as you walk a mall or store. (Remember: Google’s business is about data mining to sell ads, so using BLE as a marketing technology makes perfect sense for Android.) But they can also be used for less-intrusive purposes, such as triggering door locks.

Apple will also continue to sell the original iPad Air from last year (in 16GB or 32GB versions). The original iPad Air is virtually identical in features to the smaller iPad mini 2, apart from having a higher quality display, albeit at the same Retina display resolution.

According to AndroidPolice, the first OTA update will be released on the 3rd of November, but only for the Wi-Fi versions of the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. The Nexus 5 and two-year-old Nexus 4 will have to wait, as Wi-Fi and cellular devices take a little longer to develop updates for. Google seemingly confirmed that date in a note to app developers, revealing that the Lollipop software development kit (SDK) was available and that they could start testing their apps or publishing them to the Google Play store. It closed by saying consumers would get their first lick of Lollipop on the 3rd of November.

Press really impresses with its design, as it really gets the app out of the way so you can focus on reading. Also, where Feedly has seemingly thrown in the kitchen sink with features, Press takes the minimalist path.

Apple’s efforts to create a rich ecosystem of iPad apps deliver a strong differentiating feature over the large number of Android tablets that are designed to largely run stretched smartphone apps, or the hybrid tablet or 2-1 netbook PC devices that are intended to run Windows desktop apps—titles that aren’t really designed to work well on a tablet scale.

Google has touted that Android Lollipop will enable encryption by default, so it’ll be hard for cyber criminals and government spies to access your information. That’s supposed to bring Android to par with iOS, which has had encryption on by default since 2010’s iOS 4.2.

More than 1,000 distinct “minimization” terms appear in the files, attempting to mask the identities of “possible,” “potential” and “probable” U.S. persons, along with the names of U.S. beverage companies, universities, fast-food chains and Web-mail hosts.

When NSA and allied analysts really want to target an account, their concern for U.S. privacy diminishes. The rationales they use to judge foreignness sometimes stretch legal rules or well-known technical facts to the breaking point.

Apart from the fact that tens of millions of Americans live and travel overseas, additional millions use simple tools called proxies to redirect their data traffic around the world, for business or pleasure. World Cup fans this month have been using a browser extension called Hola to watch live-streamed games that are unavailable from their own countries. The same trick is routinely used by Americans who want to watch BBC video. The NSA also relies routinely on locations embedded in Yahoo tracking cookies, which are widely regarded by online advertisers as unreliable.

The Obama administration declines to discuss the scale of incidental collection. The NSA, backed by Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., has asserted that it is unable to make any estimate, even in classified form, of the number of Americans swept in. It is not obvious why the NSA could not offer at least a partial count, given that its analysts routinely pick out “U.S. persons” and mask their identities, in most cases, before distributing intelligence reports.

In many other cases, analysts seek and obtain approval to treat an account as “foreign” if someone connects to it from a computer address that seems to be overseas. “The best foreignness explanations have the selector being accessed via a foreign IP address,” an NSA supervisor instructs an allied analyst in Australia.

In order to allow time for analysis and outside reporting, neither Snowden nor The Post has disclosed until now that he obtained and shared the content of intercepted communications. The cache Snowden provided came from domestic NSA operations under the broad authority granted by Congress in 2008 with amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. FISA content is generally stored in closely controlled data repositories, and for more than a year, senior government officials have depicted it as beyond Snowden’s reach.

Apple’s fifth-generation iPad flaunts a 9.7-inch Retina (2048x1536p) display boasting IGZO (Indium gallium zinc oxide) screen technology and despite boasting metal based back-cover, it weighs just a little over one pound (469 g: Wi-Fi  model) and is 20-percent slimmer than the previous versions, hence the name – iPad Air.

In addition, the iPad Air 2 features the same 9.7 inches display with 2,048 x 1,536 pixels screen resolution. The tablet will house an 8 megapixel (iSight) rear-facing camera unit, whereas the original iPad Air features only a 5 megapixel camera unit. Also, the significant addition to the iPad Air 2 is the TouchID fingerprint scanner seen in iPhone 5S.

Sony’s new Xperia Z2 Tablet houses the Snapdragon 800 series quad-core processor with Adreno 330 graphics engine and it is backed by 3GB RAM and expandable 16GB memory (up to 64GB).

The new ultra-premium Galaxy Tab S is touted as the best slate series to roll out of Samsung yet, which so far been selling mid-range devices. It has heaped a lot of praises from tech pundits for its super slim body and high-resolution display.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S comes in two variants – one having 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series quad-core CP U and another model comes with Exynos 5 Octa (1.9 GHz Quad-core + 1.3 GHz Quad-core). They backed by sumptuous 3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB with options of expansion up to 128GB.

Though Apple’s iPad Air is oldest among the two rivals, it is still the most advanced tablet in the industry. It boasts company’s in-house designed Apple A7, a 64-bit architecture based efficient dual-core processor. To lessen the work load on the main CPU, Apple has planted another co-processor M7 to independently handle the motion related tasks of the phone’s gyroscope and accelerometers. It is backed by 1GB RAM and PowerVR G6430 graphics engine. Only disadvantage of Apple devices is that it comes with limited storage capacity, higher the storage space customers want more they have to shell out.

International television network A&E has enabled live streaming for two of its most popular channels — A&E and History — through their apps for Apple’s iPad. Users will still be able to access on-demand content including clips and full episodes of past shows.

A cable subscription is required to watch the channels’ live streams. Users will need to authenticate with their cable company, and A&E says the streams are only available to viewers in the United States for now.

The more you use Office on your desktop or laptop, and the closer your ties to Microsoft’s ecosystem, the more you’ll love Office on your iPad. Just remember: it’s a companion to the full-blown Office apps, not a replacement for them.

Analyst Sterne Agee said the game will bring in $30 million in revenue this year, even though it’s available free of charge in the App Store, Business Insider reports. Like other fermium games, Hearthstone comes with in-app purchases which will give users faster access to additional cards – card packs can be purchased using gold won in-game following battles, and after completing quests.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint for iPad are free to download – Microsoft says it’s been downloaded more than 12 million times – but requires an Office 365 subscription (starting from $89/year) to edit, create and save documents.

Sadly, Word hits a wall if you want to print anything: none of the Office for iPad apps work with Apple’s AirPrint wireless printing technology. This is a crippling Achilles heel to an otherwise towering app.

It’s too early to tell if Office’s popularity is due to curiosity or if an actual Office 365-paying audience is downloading the apps, though Word for iPad has already cracked Apple’s “Top Grossing” chart. Office for iPad also likely holds great appeal for businesses that are more inclined to sign Office 365 licensing agreements directly with Microsoft, which would be hidden from the App Store; the Office 365 Home subscription found in-app is for personal use only.

It appears pent-up demand for an iPad version of Microsoft’s productivity suite has propelled all three Office for iPad apps — Microsoft Word for iPad, Microsoft Excel for iPad and Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad — to the top of Apple’s iOS App Store for iPad. Microsoft introduced the apps on Thursday.

Who doesn’t like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart? Okay, I shouldn’t ask questions to which I don’t really want the answers. But if you are among the many who enjoy this and other shows on Comedy Central, you can now watch full episodes on your iOS device for free. Many of the shows are completely free to watch, but some require you to log in with your TV provider. If you’re looking for a new racing game but are sick of the usual, you might like DrawRace 2. It’s a top-down racing game with unique controls. Instead of driving with a wheel, you draw your path. If you like if-then statements and linking together web services, then you probably already know about IFTTT. Well, this week they updated this app with some pretty sweet features. Now any recipe can end in a push notification.

Caveman Feast 200 Paleo Recipes [iOS Universal; $2.99] Caveman Feast for iPhone and iPad contains 200 delicious Paleo recipes that are beautifully illustrated and easy to follow. Version 2.0.0 brings the following changes:

AirMusic [iOS Universal; Now free, down from $2.99] Access and stream your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch Music Library directly over WiFi from an Xbox, a PS3 or any compatible DLNA device.

In fact, if anything the chief complaints seem to be that Microsoft didn’t go far enough in creating a functioning Office suite for iPad, with users citing problems such as no Dropbox integration and lack of printing support.

Kevin Thau, the VP who spearheaded the acquisition of  We Are Hunted, which became part of Twitter #Music’s backend, and who worked to create the initial app, departed the company on April 24 to join Jelly, a company started by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. In September, the company hired Bob Moczydlowsky, former senior VP of product marketing at Topspin Media, as head of Twitter #Music.

Being featured on the Apple App Store is often considered a make-or-break necessity for many indie titles. With well over 1 million apps available on the app store, it is very easy for a single title to get swamped and overlooked.

Apple has relatively recently cracked down on recommendations by way of promotion for other apps on the app store with clause 2.25 of the App Store Review Guidelines. PocketGamer picked up on the change and mentioned that this could be intended to crack down on app-promotion services.

In a subsequent tweet a few hours after the announcement that it was shuttering the Twitter #Music app, the social media platform made it clear it is not done fine tuning its music strategy noting that Twitter would “continue to experiment with new ways to bring you great content based on the music activity we see every day on Twitter.”

Though it’s not clear what will replace Twitter’s music initiative, a story  this past October in Billboard reported on sources who claimed it intends to integrate the app into its main feed as one of several topic verticals so it can sell more effectively target advertising. Other verticals include news, TV and movies. Developing those verticals, sources said then, is seen as key to Twitter’s future growth.

Twitter #Music initially launched to great celebrity-hyped fanfare propelling the app to the top of the iTunes download charts. But the app quickly fell off the map within a few weeks as the buzz died. By October the app ranked No. 165 in the free music apps category, according to AppData.

Yay! Free stuff! Everyone loves free stuff. And there’s plenty of it on Android, with more than 927,000 free apps available in the Google Play store right now. We know, because we counted.*

Be aware, however, some games work better than others. A slower-paced game such as EA Mobile’s The Simpsons: Tapped Out or Kabam’s Heroes of Camelot worked much better than “twitchy” titles like Gears Studios’ Flappy Bird or Glu’s Frontline Commando, for example. (Yes, while the cult hit Flappy Bird was taken down by its developer, you can still play it for free through App Player’s built-in app store.) The problem with some fast games is lag, which can result in choppy performance. Plus, some games simply work better with your fingertip than a mouse and keyboard (though many PCs today offer touch-screens, too). Rovio’s Angry Birds Star Wars II Free felt pretty good, though.

“App Player employs complex virtualization technology that took 10 engineers two years to build — and we are always improving,” says Gargiulo. “We are the only product in the world that can run virtually any mobile app on PC or Mac.”

YWCA Safety Alert: A tap on the alert button or a shake of the phone in an emergency situation activates the app, and an alarm gives out a loud shrilling sound to attract the attention of passer-bys within the vicinity. It also sends out the distress signal with an email and SMS along with a GPS location.

Quite simply, App Player is a free program that lets you run Android 4.0 (“Ice Cream Sandwich”) and supported apps on your computer — as if you were accessing them on your smartphone or tablet.

In fact, the operating system doesn’t know it is being run on a personal computer. App compatibility is “north of 95%,” says BlueStacks marketing exec John Gargiulo at the San Jose, Calif.-based start-up.

You may also need a means of editing photos and other graphics files in standard formats such as Jpeg or Png. Here, we’re not concerned with compatibility with particular Windows software, but with the ability to import and export in the necessary formats and the provision of adequate functionality. As with Windows, a wide range of Android apps is available for photo editing.

First up is the BlueStacks App Player which it’s free from www.bluestacks.com. As the name suggests, this package allows you to run Android apps on your Windows machine but it’s not a full Android emulator so you won’t get the full Android experience.

However, unlike some similar packages, BlueStacks includes Google Play so you can search for and install apps in just the same way as with a true Android phone or tablet. As a beta release, it’s probably not reasonable to expect it to be perfect and we did, indeed, experience a few teething problems.

Yahoo News Digest: Designed to make your news-reading experience easy and painless. Yahoo News Digest finds the best and most important news and creates news digests, delivering them to you twice a day. Perfect for you to stay up-to-date with what’s important if you’re short on time. [Free]

Type Machine: Have you ever been in the middle of typing something in your phone, only for it to cock up and force you to start over? I know I have. Type Machine will make a backup of everything you type, so that if you do lose it, there’s a backup for you to go back to. It’s customisable, so you can tell it to not record for specific apps, and it all runs in the background so you won’t even know it’s doing its magic. [£1.24]

Not only that, but the screen section can then be used as a tablet by someone else, at the same time. Needless to say, buying two computers in one doesn’t come cheap and, even then, without some of the solutions we’ve seen elsewhere in this article, it doesn’t allow you to run Android apps under Windows and Windows software under Android. With a street price of £899, you’d probably be better off buying a separate Android device and a laptop at the moment. However, if this type of computer really takes off, expect prices to tumble. What’s more, if it also provides a means of the Android and Windows elements interacting with each other, with the ability to share software between the two platforms, we think manufacturers will be onto a winner.

Now, if you’ll recall what I said in my last column, you know that I believe we are on the cusp of a new buying cycle for more computing capable devices. While we can argue that even some smaller tablets are computing capable, we can’t argue that the more productive someone wants to be the more they may value a larger screen.

This trend is more pronounced in tablet application development. According to a new Evans Data developer survey, 84% of those that want to develop for tablets target Android compared to 62% targeting iOS and 52% targeting Windows.

One of the things that impressed me the most was the virtual keyboard. I am a heavy iPad Air user and I can type faster than most people on the virtual keyboard with ease. But Samsung’s keyboard was even a bit larger than the iPad’s allowing me to incorporate my pinky into they typing process, which is a finger I don’t use on the iPad.

Apple and its supporters contest that Android serves a “junk market” where devices are bought but not used. As I’ve argued before, this is wrong. Android gets used, but in different ways than iOS devices get used.

The
South Korean manufacturer has not revealed the pricing of the new
Galaxy Tab3 Lite. However, Samsung has announced that the new tablet will be offered globally and will
be available in Black and White colour variants. Considering that the
tablet has been touted to be the most affordable in Samsung’s Galaxy Tab
series, we can expect the tablet to be priced in budget segment.

In any case, I think it’s clear larger screen tablets will play a critical role in the future of computing and 2014 is shaping up as the year we start to see progress in that direction.

9. Get a few good apps. There are tons of options, obviously, and tons of use cases, but I like the Kindle App for e-reading, Flipboard for news, YouTube/Netflix/Hulu Plus, Pages for writing, Google Maps as a must-have Apple Maps replacement, Evernote for general note-taking, and Plants vs. Zombies, Ticket to Ride, and Angry Birds Space as must-have first-day games (read our must-have games list for more ideas). Even better, ask friends who use an iPad what they’re using.

3. Find your other free(ish) stuff. I bet you have plenty of grandfathered-in “free” content that’s ready to go on your iPad — free because you already paid for it elsewhere. First, go to your iTunes or App Store apps and browse under “purchased” (it’s usually hidden away under the “More” tab, or it’s under “Updates” in the App Store). It’s an ugly way to browse what you’ve already bought, but make sure you stock up on any iPhone apps you already own that are universal for iPad, and in iTunes download music, movies, and books you already have.

We use our PadGadget Apps Tracker to constantly monitor the App Store to find the biggest price changes on iPad apps. Our editorial team goes through the data, picks the best deals on the most interesting apps and then brings them to you on a regular basis. All app prices are checked at the time of posting but prices are subject to change without notice. When developers put their apps on sale it’s usually for a very limited time, often 24 hours or less, so be sure to check pricing on iTunes before making a purchase.

10. Get a good case. Or a bag. The iPad just comes with a Lightning cable for syncing and charging, nothing more. You need some sort of protection. Apple’s own Smart Cover is a clever multi-use accessory that protects the screen, but not the back. If you’re getting an Apple-made accessory, I prefer the new leather Smart Case, but it’s more expensive. If you’re a large-iPad owner, consider something that docks easily with a keyboard — check out some keyboard cases here. For the Mini, a booklike folio cover feels best. And don’t go overboard with specialty bags; something with separate pockets and padding and can still hold other stuff works best. Read my advice on that from a year ago, most of which still holds true now.

2. Get your free iWork and iLife apps. iPhone, iPod and iPad buyers now get a suite of Apple productivity and media-creation apps for free that used to collectively cost a fair amount of money. Definitely download these — in fact, when you’re setting up your iPad for the first time, you’re prompted to begin downloading all the free Apple-created software. All the apps are universal, so if you got them already by buying a new iPhone, you’ll be able to redownload the iPad versions for free via your Already Purchased apps on the App Store if you bought a used iPad. Pages, Numbers and Keynote are very good word processing, spreadsheet and presentation-creation apps, and they even sync via iCloud and to Macs that own these apps in OSX Mavericks. There’s no reason not to use them. iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are similarly good photo editing, video editing and music creation tools. Other apps match the features of iPhoto, but few solutions out there can beat iMovie or GarageBand. All of these have been graphically redesigned for iOS 7.

6. Tweak your notifications and privacy. Every app likes to scream out all its information all the time via banners and other annoying pop-ups on your home screen. You can override this by going to Notifications and unchecking all the various notifications options. There are many, but I’d suggest removing them all for apps you don’t consider essential. Make sure banners are off and the notifications don’t appear in the lock screen, and you should find yourself less pestered. Similarly, make sure you examine your Privacy settings, and deactivate (or activate) any location or information sharing you’d like on certain apps. You may not want your photos to be geotagged on social networks.
