Paternot says the networking aspect of Slated’s membership is just as much a benefit as funding. “We’re not a just a crowdfunding platform — we are a marketplace, helping members find talent, sales agents, distributors, buyers,” he said. More than half of the introductions made on Slated are industry to industry, not just between investors and filmmakers. Modine’s Rocking Horsemen campaign, for example, was born of a Slated connection. Producer Williams first met Modine many years ago, though the two didn’t reconnect until Modine started tracking Williams on Slated. That led to a meeting, and Williams came onboard to produce Rocking Horsemen shortly thereafter. “I’ve always said getting in front of someone is key,” said Williams, who still prefers in-person pitching to digital dealings, but “this way we’re bringing this project to a lot of people might not have thought of, and financiers I would never had met.”

Si te gusta el cine o eres aficionado a las series de televisión o simplemente quieres estar al día de las ultimas novedades, IMDb Cine & TV es tu app para iPad Mini, iPad y iPhone. Submitted projects must be as fully packaged as possible to pass muster and get posted to Slated. For Horsemen, Modine’s attached Jared Gilman (Moonrise Kingdom), Riley Griffiths (Super 8), Miles Heizer (Parenthood), and James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom). Modine also is attached to star and Orian Williams (Control, Big Sur) is producing alongside Cinco Dedos Peliculas Productions‘ Modine and Adam Rackoff.

Slated, then, is less a Kickstarter peer and more akin to an OKCupid for film financing: a gated online marketplace intended to connect like-minded filmmakers, investors, sales reps, and other industry figures with the ultimate goal of financing indie projects of a certain size. To join Slated, verified members must be vouched for by two other members. To invest, investors must be SEC-accredited and be vouched for by two other Slated investors. Each posted project seeking funding or other services is vetted by Slated and must fall within the site’s parameters: $500K-$15M budgets for features and $250K-$2M for documentaries. “Anything below, we recommend filmmakers, especially first-time filmmakers or filmmakers doing something highly experimental, first go to Indiegogo,” said Slated co-founder and chairman Stephan Paternot.

9. Get a few good apps. There are tons of options, obviously, and tons of use cases, but I like the Kindle App for e-reading, Flipboard for news, YouTube/Netflix/Hulu Plus, Pages for writing, Google Maps as a must-have Apple Maps replacement, Evernote for general note-taking, and Plants vs. Zombies, Ticket to Ride, and Angry Birds Space as must-have first-day games (read our must-have games list for more ideas). Even better, ask friends who use an iPad what they’re using.

3. Find your other free(ish) stuff. I bet you have plenty of grandfathered-in “free” content that’s ready to go on your iPad — free because you already paid for it elsewhere. First, go to your iTunes or App Store apps and browse under “purchased” (it’s usually hidden away under the “More” tab, or it’s under “Updates” in the App Store). It’s an ugly way to browse what you’ve already bought, but make sure you stock up on any iPhone apps you already own that are universal for iPad, and in iTunes download music, movies, and books you already have.

We use our PadGadget Apps Tracker to constantly monitor the App Store to find the biggest price changes on iPad apps. Our editorial team goes through the data, picks the best deals on the most interesting apps and then brings them to you on a regular basis. All app prices are checked at the time of posting but prices are subject to change without notice. When developers put their apps on sale it’s usually for a very limited time, often 24 hours or less, so be sure to check pricing on iTunes before making a purchase.

10. Get a good case. Or a bag. The iPad just comes with a Lightning cable for syncing and charging, nothing more. You need some sort of protection. Apple’s own Smart Cover is a clever multi-use accessory that protects the screen, but not the back. If you’re getting an Apple-made accessory, I prefer the new leather Smart Case, but it’s more expensive. If you’re a large-iPad owner, consider something that docks easily with a keyboard — check out some keyboard cases here. For the Mini, a booklike folio cover feels best. And don’t go overboard with specialty bags; something with separate pockets and padding and can still hold other stuff works best. Read my advice on that from a year ago, most of which still holds true now.

2. Get your free iWork and iLife apps. iPhone, iPod and iPad buyers now get a suite of Apple productivity and media-creation apps for free that used to collectively cost a fair amount of money. Definitely download these — in fact, when you’re setting up your iPad for the first time, you’re prompted to begin downloading all the free Apple-created software. All the apps are universal, so if you got them already by buying a new iPhone, you’ll be able to redownload the iPad versions for free via your Already Purchased apps on the App Store if you bought a used iPad. Pages, Numbers and Keynote are very good word processing, spreadsheet and presentation-creation apps, and they even sync via iCloud and to Macs that own these apps in OSX Mavericks. There’s no reason not to use them. iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are similarly good photo editing, video editing and music creation tools. Other apps match the features of iPhoto, but few solutions out there can beat iMovie or GarageBand. All of these have been graphically redesigned for iOS 7.

6. Tweak your notifications and privacy. Every app likes to scream out all its information all the time via banners and other annoying pop-ups on your home screen. You can override this by going to Notifications and unchecking all the various notifications options. There are many, but I’d suggest removing them all for apps you don’t consider essential. Make sure banners are off and the notifications don’t appear in the lock screen, and you should find yourself less pestered. Similarly, make sure you examine your Privacy settings, and deactivate (or activate) any location or information sharing you’d like on certain apps. You may not want your photos to be geotagged on social networks.

Mobile Professional – If you are a mobile professional that wants to supplement a laptop while on the go the iPad Air with 4G LTE or the iPad mini Retina with 4G LTE are good options. Both offer a high-resolution display that can act as a second monitor with cheap software and the 4G LTE connection can be used to act as a hotspot for your laptop and other gadgets that will last nearly 24 hours.

Apple sells the iPad 2, iPad mini, iPad mini Retina and the iPad Air. The price of an iPad ranges from $299 to $499 for the base models and goes all the way up to $929 for a top of the line model with cellular connectivity. Some of the prices overlap which means if you are on a budget you will want to pick between size of the device, storage and 4G LTE connectivity to get the best iPad for your needs.

Parents – If you are buying an iPad to share with a kid in the house the iPad 2 is tempting, but the iPad mini at $299 is a better option for most users. This smaller iPad will better fit smaller hands and is portable enough to put in a small backpack for travel or stuff into your back pocket while loading a kid in the car. This may be a better choice than an iPod touch if you want a device for a child.

Three new versions of theiPadhave come along since I started using one. Despite the superbRetina displayscreenthat debuted with the third version, I have never been really tempted to upgrade my oldiPad. That was until the Apple decided to come out with theiPadAir, much thinner and lighter.

I have been a dedicatediPaduser since the middle of 2011 when the second version of the world’s first tablet was launched. Over the past two years it has become my primary computing device, especially when it comes to consumption. Though a couple of years old, theiPad2 is still a great device, as I am reminded every time I test a new tablet.

The App & Game Lover – If you love to play games and carry all kinds of apps with you the iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina are the top choices. The high resolution display will make apps look great and the new Apple A7 processor is fast enough to handle any games and apps you throw at it.

“They look around see if we were near then and when they saw we weren’t near them they took cart and they started putting clothes in there to make it look like it was theirs and to hide it,” Sailin said.

“Even though they were able to ramp up more quickly than anticipated in November and December it still takes a while to get those products out,” said Alexander. “So, they’re managing the rollout very carefully.”

Verizon shows the
iPad Mini with Retina Display back ordered until December 16, as of Friday morning Pacific time, while AT&T is still showing 21-28 days when the device is ordered online.

Cellular models of the iPad Mini Retina are also available for walk-in purchase at many Apple stores across the US, despite the fact that this is not possible at Verizon and AT&T.

The availability of the iPad Mini Retina cellular models contrasts with the iPad Air sales launch. When Apple started selling the iPad Air on November 1, it was available at Verizon, AT&T, and other carriers on the same day. Currently, carrier outlets like Verizon and AT&T typically have the Air at stores.

Meanwhile, the availability of all iPad Mini Retina models — both Wi-Fi-only and cellular versions — on Apple’s store page has improved somewhat: availability is now 5-7 days, a slight improvement over the 5-10 days that the company had been showing last week.

My biggest complaint with the original iPad Mini was its weak display. Go ahead. Call me a snoot. But after years of living in a pixel-free world, the old iPad Mini’s screen looked too grainy for me to properly enjoy it. It’s the primary reason why I thought Google’s new Nexus 7 was better than the iPad Mini this summer.

The iPad’s biggest advantage over the competition is its app selection. As good as its two biggest rivals, the Kindle Fire HDX and Nexus 7, may be, those devices simply don’t have as many good tablet-optimized apps as the iPad does. The Google Play Store for Android apps is full of great software, but most of it is designed for smaller screen smartphones. Developers are much more active on the iPad, which means you can get versions of your favorite apps that take full advantage of 8-inch+ screens.

Hark, Leonard Read fans! Take heart, disillusioned entrepreneurs! The iPad is a wonder of capitalism just like the pencil. And contrasting a pencil – seemingly simple, but used far less in our digital age – with an iPad reminds us that the collaboration that made possible the manufacture of old tools still works the same way today.

Watching video on the iPad Air is also a noticeable improvement from doing so on smaller displays. The screen size isn’t much bigger, but as it is with reading ebooks, it’s big enough to make a world of difference.

This past week I’ve been using the iPad Air with the ZAGGkeys Folio keyboard almost exclusively for my work, and it’s been great. The combo is as thin as can be, and the combined weight is very light. I can slip it into a pocket on almost any bag without noticing it when I carry it around.

An iPad and a pencil aren’t that different, after all. As the ad notes, both can “start a poem or finish a symphony;” both are “extremely simple and yet extremely powerful.” And just as importantly, the process of making each of these items hinges on the expertise of many parties, working independently of one another to advance their own interests.

So when is this going to happen? Well, given that the iPad 5 launch event is set for October 22nd, we expect Apple to make changes on October 22nd. If the iPad 2 is getting replaced, it will be taken out of the Apple Store next week. As for the iPad 5, we expect the release date to land around November 1st, a Friday, and 10 days after the iPad launch event.

As for the iPad Mini, USA Today reports that it will get Retina display for its 7.9 inch diagonal display. Apple representatives say it’s faster with a 5 megapixel camera. It comes in colors silver, white, space gray and black, and costs $399 for 16GB with Wifi, and $529 with cell tech, reports USA Today.

But perhaps a simpler explanation for the iPad 2’s popularity is that you can still buy one today — for $100 less than the current generation. The fourth-generation iPad replaced the third-generation tablet when it went it was released, while the iPad 2 has remained on sale for the entire time.

Our partners at USA Today report that Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple, introduced the iPad Air to an audience saying, “This is the biggest step yet.”

Currently, the iPad 2, a device that is now several years old, is being sold alongside the iPad 4 inside Apple’s Store. However, it’s looking like that’s going to change very soon. Rumors suggest that the iPad 5 is in its way to replace the iPad 4 as the company’s flagship full-sized iPad. The device is rumored to be bringing all sorts of upgrades to the table and it’s likely to phase out at least one of the current models.

According to USA TODAY, the iPad Air weighs 1 pound, down from 1.4 pounds. Inside, the iPad Air has an Apple A7 chip, which is the same as an iPhone 5s, according to USA TODAY.

Most consumers need not worry about their fingerprints being stolen from their phone. The iPhone 5s physically can’t communicate the fingerprint data to other parts of the device or the cloud; the section responsible for housing the fingerprint data in the iPhone 5s simply tells the other half of the processor “yes” or “no” depending on whether or not the sensor could authenticate one’s identity. The system is secure, and it also works incredibly fast: By pressing the home button to activate the phone and holding your thumb in place, Touch ID works almost instantly; it’s tough to go back to the old “Swipe to Unlock” after experiencing Touch ID.

The iPhone 5s is powered by Apple’s new dual-core A7 SoC, which boasts speeds up to two times faster than the iPhone 5 in both computational and graphics performance. But even more impressive than its architecture, which is built on “billions of transistors,” is the fact that iPhone 5s is the world’s first smartphone built for 64-bit. It may not mean much right now, but the A7 chip provides opportunities for developers to build desktop-class applications for iPhone, which can be a real game-changer.

The new iPad mini is expected to be released with a modest upgrade to its processor, and possibly (finally) a Retina display, but the new iPad 5 might just steal the show at the Oct. 22 event, as the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s fifth-generation iPad will reportedly release with dramatic changes to its exterior and interior features.

The cases from the aforementioned conference also indicate that the new iPad mini will feature a re-located microphone on the rear of the device. Besides the new display, we understand that the iPad mini 2 will feature a faster chip (likely a 64-bit A7 variant) and that Touch ID has not been present on recent internal test models.

Word from BGR suggests that build 11B491 will be hitting the likes of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c devices this week for Apple partners and employees, while the iPhone 4 and 4S along with the iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad mini, and original iPad will be seeing the update along with the public by next week. This update also hits the 5th generation iPod touch for good measure – even the Space Gray version.

In addition to the iPads, we also expect the jam-packed Oct. 22 event to reintroduce Mac OS X Mavericks, which was first unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote event in June. To go with the new Mac software, we also expect the company to update its Mac hardware, including a new MacBook Pro with Retina display (this time, powered by Intel’s fourth-generation Haswell processor), a new Mac mini, and a new Mac Pro, which was also given a sneak peek in June. We may also see a few surprises at the Oct. 22 event, including new Apple TV hardware — and, possibly, a first glimpse at the company’s rumored smart wristwatch, the iWatch. We believe most new Mac hardware will release within one to three days after the Oct. 22 unveiling, while we maintain the release date for both new iPads will be the following Friday.

Let me insert here that I had the Pro for about two months, then sold it. As I said before, it was a decent laptop, but I didn’t need another laptop.

Yesterday, Apple rolled out its second update to its new iOS 7 operating system in the form of iOS 7.0.2, a small update aimed at tackling a pretty large problem. The update arrived for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and here, we take a close look at how the iOS 7.0.2 update performs on Apple’s iPad third-generation, also known as the iPad 3.

On the iPad 3, the installation process took about 10 minutes. The update is small, around 20MB, but the overall process can still take a little bit of time. That said, we still suggest iPad owners make a backup of their data before installing the update as there is always the potential that something could get fouled up. Our experience, however, was flawless.

The average sale price for all iPad models, Apple Insider said, saw bleedings of up to 17 per cent in the June 2013 quarter. At the same time, slates in the Google mobile platform gathered considerable steam, clocking 17 per cent ASP traction during the April to June stretch of the same period.

For those who are maybe holding back, or just want some reassurance, we have dove into the iOS 7.0.2 update for the iPad 3 and here, we offer our impressions of its performance.

Last week, Apple finally delivered the big changes it talked about when it took the stage in June at WWDC and announced a brand new iOS update, an iOS update that the company dubbed iOS 7. Instead of an incremental iOS update like the others before it, updates that focused on adding new features to the company’s iconic operating system, iOS 7 delivered new features on top of a brand new look.
